Meet Joe Tugaw
Candidate for Wasatch County Council Seat F

Joe Tugaw, a dedicated community leader with deep roots in Utah and Idaho, has announced his candidacy for Wasatch County Council Seat F. Joe brings a practical, problem-solving mindset shaped by decades of professional experience and a lifelong connection to the land. Raised in Salt Lake City and on a family cattle ranch in Twin Falls, Idaho—a ranch that has been in his family since 1876—Joe understands firsthand the challenges of wildfire risk, land use, and emergency preparedness. He believes county leadership must be proactive, informed, and grounded in real-world experience.

With a 50-year career in business, including real estate investing and ownership of eight small businesses across Utah, Idaho, Arizona, Washington, and Massachusetts, Joe  brings extensive corporate experience. He has served as a Senior Financial Analyst and Manager of Financial Forecasting and Budgeting Systems for a Fortune 500 company, and as a Senior Business Analyst at Ernst & Young, giving him a unique perspective on financial and information systems issues.

Joe Tugaw holds a BA in Finance and Information Systems and an MBA. He has served as President of his college fraternity and was instrumental in reestablishing the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity at Utah State University.

Beyond his professional achievements, Joe Tugaw is passionate about community and the outdoors. He was President of his high school ski team, competed in the Western Amateur Freestyle Ski Association, and raced downhill for the Park City Ski Team. His lifelong involvement in ranching and agriculture has fostered a deep commitment to rural communities and sustainable land stewardship.

Throughout his career, Joe Tugaw has demonstrated a strong commitment to community service—mentoring students, advising organizations, and supporting local initiatives. He is running to bring thoughtful planning, fiscal responsibility, and community-centered decision-making to the County Council, ensuring Wasatch County remains safe, resilient, and sustainable for generations to come.

Joe Tugaw, a Democrat running for Wasatch County Council Seat F in the 2026 election, bases his platform on leveraging his extensive financial background to manage the county's rapid growth.

His key priorities include:

Community-Centered Representation: Tugaw has stated that his "No. 1 priority" is listening to constituents and serving as a responsive voice for the people in the northern region of the county.

Infrastructure-First Development: He advocates ensuring adequate infrastructure is in place before new development begins, with a focus on impacts on water systems and aquifer protection.

Fiscal Responsibility: Drawing on his 50-year career as a financial analyst and business owner, he aims to bring specialized knowledge in budgeting and financial systems to council decision-making.

Sustainable Stewardship: Influenced by his background in agriculture and ranching, his platform emphasizes land use planning, wildfire risk mitigation, and emergency preparedness.

Thoughtful Planning: He intends to transition the area from a "sleepy mountain town" to a growing hub through proactive, informed leadership that balances modern growth with traditional rural roots.
